I Was a Tomboy - 1374 Words
I was a tomboy. Not a tomboy in the sense that most people think of one, but in the way that all adventurous, curious little girls are. I played kick ball at recess. I wore Bart Simpson sweatshirts. I played Indians. I went fishing. Somewhere along the way, Ive lost some of that tomboy in me. Its interesting that when changes come in my life, although the change has probably been brewing for some time, there is usually one event that seems to mark that change. So when I look back, I think of the change as before and after that one event. Its no surprise, then, that I remember one distinct event which, in my mind, was the point of my return from Never-Never Land -- the event that marked my transition from my protected place, myâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This went on until the spring of my fifth grade year, when in gym class we began preparing for the Fun Run, an end of the year race for all fifth grade students in the Cedar Rapids area. I came home, excitedly telling my mom about the race. I told her I bet I would see all of my church friends at the race -- maybe I could even run with some of them! Later the week, Mom drove me out to JC Penneys and insisted that I pick out a bra to wear for the Fun Run. I was humiliated -- I walked out of the store, telling her to pick it out herself. As we walked around the rest of the mall, I hid the bag under my shirt because I was scared that people would be able to see through the bag, and think to themselves, Now why is that little girl carrying around a bra? nbsp; As the big race day began approaching, I got more and more nervous. What if people would be able to see through my shirt? They would know that I wasnt like them anymore, that I was somehow older. On the day of the Fun Run, even though it was 90 degrees outside, I wore two shirts. No one would know my dirty secret. nbsp; Up until the day when I had to wear that bra, I had felt free to be whatever I wanted. When I put on that bra, I felt changed, different somehow. Putting that bra on was like stamping me with a label -- I was now officially a young woman, there was a set of rules to go by. Society had taughtShow MoreRelatedEssay on Gender Stereotypes in T.V. Marketing Strategy Advertising Appeal and Celebrity Endorser
Question: Discuss about theMarketing Strategyfor Advertising Appeal and Celebrity Endorser. Answer: Creation of Intended Message through Slogan: Bhakar et al (2016) stated in the context of advertising that the primary objective of creating slogan is to connect to the prospective consumers of the product in an enhanced manner. The slogan concerning a certain product requires to be consumer focused and thereby slogan that do not tend to connect with the consumers are construed to be ineffective or, in certain cases, counter-productive. In terms of the current case pertaining to Breyers ice cream, the slogan requires resonating of the features of the products and thereby requires containing appetizing messages that are aimed at enhancing the appeal of the product. Primarily ice cream companies or companies dealing with the different set of consumer good focus primarily upon the features of the product or the goodness that is entailed in the product. In the previous campaigns of Breyers, the slogans, pertaining to the product were its way beyond ice cream So good, it must be Breyers (Breyers 2016). Thereby the company focused u pon the deliverance of its products that are rich in quality. In case of Thailand market, the Breyerss slogan should be Flavours that cherishes every moment, this can in turn facilitate in associating the ice cream with celebration and festivities. In comparison, the slogan of its competitors such as Haagen Dazs Even the names tastes good or made like no other focuses solely upon the product (Haagendazs.us 2016). On the other hand, the slogan pertaining to Breyers resonates in terms of both displaying the quality of the product and relating the experience of having Breyers ice cream with celebrating each moment. Creative Appeal Strategy: Guvremont Grohmann (2013) stated that the sub consciousness of consumers play a significant role in terms of determining the decisions that they undertake in preferring one product over that of other. Moreover, it can be inferred that consumers do not have full control over their sub consciousness. Thereby, the preferences tend to be those that rely upon instincts and emotional appeal as opposed to rational decision-making. In the current case pertaining to Breyers, it can be construed that emotional appeal is more suitable that rational appeal. It is owing to the fact that the product that Breyers deal with, which is ice creams, tend to attract consumers based upon the attractiveness and features such as deliciousness and tastes. Such features appeal to consumer on an emotional level rather than on a rational level. This is owing to the fact that ice creams does not fall under basic necessities but rather can be construed as having characteristics similar to that of luxurious products. Moreover, consumption of certain product tends to elevate the lifestyle of individuals and Breyers ice cream can be construed to be included in the same category. Consumers tend to feel enthusiastic when consuming products such as ice creams as they rejoice or feel happy after consuming such product. Thereby, as far as Breyers ice cream is concerned, it is pertinent to note that emotional appeal works best. Shoeless Joe And The Black Sox Scandal Essays - Baseball, Sports
Shoeless Joe and the Black Sox Scandal After winning the 1906 World Series, the Chicago White Sox were not able to maintain their position of number one. They remained in the middle of the American League until 1915 when a new manager, Clarence Rowland and a new star, Joe Jackson, joined the team. Joe Jackson was a star from South Carolina who was known as "Shoeless" Joe because of his poverty-stricken childhood. Joe Jackson was dubbed "The finest natural hitter in the history of the game." In 1917 the White Sox won one hundred games in the regular season and went on to defeat the New York Giants in the World Series four games to two. Two years later the Sox were in the World Series thanks to their two twenty game winners, Eddie Cicotte and Clause Williams. The White Sox lost the best-of-nine series five games to three. A reporter for the Cincinnati Tribune thought something was wrong when he found out that someone had placed a two million dollar bet on the underdog Reds. One year later, in September 1920, Jackson, Cicotte and Wilson signed confessions to receiving five thousand dollars to throw the World Series. Before the trial for Jackson, Cicotte and Wilson, there was a turnover in the Illinois State Attorney's Office and all the confessions mysteriously disappeared. The three baseball players then said they didn't sign the confessions so the case was dropped. The new commissioner for Major League Baseball was Kenesaw Mountain Landis and he believed three players were guilty. He also believed they weren't the only ones on the team that threw the series. Kenesaw Mountain Landis kicked seven players from the White Sox team of 1919 out of Major League Baseball for life. Eddie Cicotte, Chick Gandil, Clause Williams, Happy Felsch, Swede Risberg, Fred McMullin and Joe Jackson were suspended for accepting a bribe to throw a series. Eight players were actually suspended for life but only seven took bribes. Buck Weaver, the eighth player who was suspended did not take money to throw the series. He was suspended because he knew what was going on but did not say anything. Even though Joe Jackson was accused of throwing the World Series he had the highest batting average in the series which was .375. He had no errors, twelve hits and the series only homerun. Do those statistics sound like "Shoeless" Joe Jackson threw the series. This turned out to be the greatest fix in the history of baseball.

How to Write a Speech
How to Write a Speech How to Write a Speech When it comes to public speaking ââ¬â in the studentââ¬â¢s case, giving a speech to a classroom of their peers and their instructor ââ¬â oneââ¬â¢s success lies in preparation. Which means that delivering a good speech ultimately depends on the writing aà speech. After all, a speech is like a spoken essay. Some people are natural-born public speakers who can entertain an entire room without a second of planning; however, the student in higher education who is to give a speech (who is also most likely a novice public speaker) should follow these 10 speech writing steps. 10 Speech Writing Steps 1. Plan the speech according to the occasion. The student required to give a speech will probably be speaking in an academic setting, where a serious, informative or persuasive tone will serve them best. Most times, the student will be given a time limit, which should be strictly followed. 2. Recognize the theme/message or purpose of the speech. This will help the student identify which direction they are going to take in the writing/planning/researching of the speech, helping them develop a sort of formula to achieve that purpose. 3. Be creative with the speechââ¬â¢s introduction. Once the student knows what they are going to say, they should consider a brief, interesting way to get their audienceââ¬â¢s attention ââ¬â whether with a joke, an interesting anecdote, famous quote, even a thought-provoking question. 4. Learn how to write a speech outline. This helps the student visualize all the points they need to cover in their speech. 5. Expand on the points in the speech outline. If theyââ¬â¢re given a speech in a persuasive manner, they will need a solid thesis statement defended by strong evidence to support their argument. If giving an informative speech for an assignment, the student should incorporate solid, research-based information. In either case, the student must center their speech on the theme, issue, or subject they are discussing, arguing, or analyzing. 6. Incorporate transitional phrases to cover various points. Words like ââ¬Å"First of all,â⬠ââ¬Å"Secondly,â⬠ââ¬Å"Next,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Lastlyâ⬠help the speaker better transition from point to point, for their own sake and the audience. 7. Donââ¬â¢t forget about the conclusion. Just like with an essay or written assignment, a proper conclusion allows the speaker to tie in all the points of their speech, leaving the audience with a comprehensive understanding of what they just discussed. 8. Write the speech out in full, in essay form. Include the introduction, the points to be covered, as well as transitional phrases, and a conclusion ââ¬â and then evaluate its effectiveness. Edit if needed. Writing more than one draft helps the student add or remove pertinent information. 9. Ask a friend to revise the written speech; revise the draft based on their feedback. Once the student feels their written speech is nearly completed, seeking the help of another person is beneficial. They will see things the writer may not notice, which will ultimately improve the speech. 10. Read the speech aloud. Before the student rehearses their speech first for familiarization, then memorization, they should read the speech aloud to compare how it sounds with how it reads; this could be the difference in an awkward, boring speech or one that is interesting and gets a higher grade. College Burnout Detect and Fight
College Burnout Detect and Fight Being in college should be one of the most exciting times of your life. For most students, it is their first chance at a life beyond the apron strings of the parents. For the first time they get to make decisions for themselves and learn what it means to be an adult. However, it is also a period of life when there is a lot of pressure. Thats why many students are at risk to experience college burnout. Not only do they have manage getting to class on time and tackling extremely difficult courses, but most will also have to juggle these things along with a job, paying rent, food shopping, and managing a family all at the same time. Itââ¬â¢s no secret that college students lead extremely demanding lives and can easily become overwhelmed with this type of major change in lifestyle. For many, it can become so stressful that it can get to be just too much to deal with and some students consider dropping out of college. Two Options So, when struggling students finds themselves behind the gun with the deadline for an assignment coming due, they usually see only two options. Take the easy way out and hire someone to do the work for them or they can spend endless and sleepless nights trying to get done, many times neglecting other responsibilities in the process. This may work for a while but what happens after you have completed all that work and you donââ¬â¢t get the results you want? Your grades do not measure up to the amount of work you put in. You become exhausted, irritated, and discouraged. If this happens repeatedly, no matter how hard you try, your sense of dedication and the enthusiasm you felt at the beginning of the term will begin to wane. And if youââ¬â¢re like most people, youââ¬â¢ll begin to show signs of college burnout. What Is College Burnout? No matter how excited we get about going to college, it is literally impossible to remain upbeat 100% of the time. It is also impossible to remain on point for every task we have to face. After all, we are only humans and our brain power has to be refueled on a regular basis. If not, we can become overextended and fatigue will begin to set in. This is completely normal and nearly everyone goes through it. However, if you reach a point where occasional breaks are not enough to refuel your spirit you may be trying to cope with college burnout. So, how can you tell the difference between just regular exhaustion and college burnout? Health Problems: As your level of depression gets stronger, your immune system weakens and youââ¬â¢ll find yourself getting sick more often. Aside from headaches and unusual aches and pains, you may have bouts of insomnia (leading to a lack of energy), lingering colds, and other issues with your health. Cognitive Abilities Diminish: As your stress level increases, your normal brain functions will begin to diminish. Youââ¬â¢ll notice that you become forgetful and your decisions become erratic. Your ability to concentrate on your studies is affected and you begin to make the kinds of mistakes you would never normally do. This will naturally lead to even lower grades automatically sending you into a downward spiral leading to further depression and an even stronger sense of failure. Lack of Motivation: One of the first signs of burnout is a lack of motivation. Your initial desire to do well in your studies gives way to a defeatist attitude. Your mind tells you that youââ¬â¢re not going to do well anyway and you have a sense that you will let people down no matter how hard you try. As a result, you are unable to muster up any desire to try. Boredom/Lack of Interest in Things: Boredom will set in and youââ¬â¢ll have no interest in anything, even things you once enjoyed. Your hobbies and interests will not be enough to pull you out of your negative mood. Even when you are successful in something there will be no sense of pride or satisfaction in the work youââ¬â¢ve done. Relationships Begin to Suffer: Burnout causes many students to pull away from relationships. Youââ¬â¢ll find yourself avoiding people and go into a hibernation mode not wanting to communicate with anyone around you. All of these symptoms are a direct result of stress the student may experience. When youââ¬â¢re suffering from college burnout, you might lose control of your emotions and end up fighting over insignificant things, your attention will automatically drift to the negative side, and you can become very judgmental. Anyone experiencing these kinds of symptoms is most likely dealing with college burnout. The question at this point is ââ¬Ëwhat can you do about it?ââ¬â¢ How to Deal With College Burnout? One of the challenges of this unpleasant state is that you donââ¬â¢t have a lot of time to let the negativity run its course. You have deadlines to meet, courses to study for and the longer you linger in the depressive quagmire the worse your situation can become. You need to do something that can address your situation quickly. Tip #1:Seek Counseling Your university likely has a counselor that can help you to cope with your problems. Seek their guidance, they are there to give you support during those tougher than usual times. Make an appointment and take their suggestions seriously. They may recommend a semester of study off-major to give you a break from the pressure or they may offer other suggestions you may not have thought of to get you back on track. Tip #2: Take Care of Your Physical Needs First Most of the problems youââ¬â¢re dealing with in college burnout are all inter-related. But you wonââ¬â¢t be able to recover from any of them if your body is not strong enough to fight back. It is more important to maintain your physical health before attempting to deal with your psychological and emotional issues. Start by eating healthy meals (even if you donââ¬â¢t want to) and making sure you get enough nutrition. When your body is well nourished, you will naturally sleep better, which will automatically help you better manage your emotions and mental state. If you do not see any improvement from managing your physical needs, it is very important that you see a doctor to make sure there are no other underlying causes that you arenââ¬â¢t aware of. Tip #3: Re-evaluate Your Goals Sometimes eager students are determined to push through their college years faster than usual. They may take on more classes than they need to or they have not seen the value in taking breaks. At times, to get over burnout may be as simple as setting smaller, easier to achieve goals. If youre feeling that your planning skills are not good enough, read our guide on how to improve your planning skills to perform better in college. Tip #4: Meditation Other students have discovered that practicing meditation and mindfulness has been very effective in getting you back on track. Even some thing as simple as positive self talk can help you to improve your overall outlook. Once your body and your mind are in sync, you will find that your entire attitude will begin to make the shift from negative to positive and youââ¬â¢ll be back on task before you know it. Everyone experiences burnout from time to time. It is a common occurrence with anyone who lives a busy life. Dealing with college burnout is not the end of the road and chances are youââ¬â¢ll deal with other types of it later on in life. The good news is that these feelings donââ¬â¢t last forever and with the right mindset and tools to fight it, you will be back to your studies and living the life of a college student in a very short period of time.
